What to Look For in DC12V Pixel Led Strips

There are several things to consider when purchasing LED strip, especially addressable RGB strip. The first is the brightness rating. Most manufacturers provide a number of lumens per foot/meter. The second is power draw. This is usually listed in the datasheet.

The third is color consistency and quality. The higher the pixel count, the more consistent and brighter the strip will be. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean that it will be as flexible. Many of the dc12v pixel led strips on the market have a high lumen per meter rating, but are incredibly stiff and difficult to cut, mount, and work with.

In addition to these basic requirements, the IC used to control the LEDs must be capable of achieving desired colors and effects at the required voltage. Many pixel lights use the WS2812B driver, but there are also others such as the SK6812.

The SK6812 has a built in signal reshaping circuit that makes the colors remain more consistent over a wider range of supply voltages. The WS2812B, on the other hand, is more sensitive to changes in voltage. Therefore, it will appear slightly pink in hue the farther it is from the power source. This is a minor difference that most people will not notice, but it should be taken into account.
