What Are the Advantages of the apa102 Led Chips?
The apa102 led chips are a new contender in the digitally addressable LED strip world.apa102 led chips They have a few things that set them apart from the current best sellers like the ws2812b (neopixel). One big difference is they require two pins to send data - one clock and one data. This allows them to be controlled by almost any microcontroller or microprocessor without requiring a special logic level translator like the WS2812B.
They also operate natively on 5V. That makes it easy to use them with Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone or any other 'raw' microcontroller/microprocessor. Finally they support a much higher data rate than the WS2812B, which means they are much faster to control.
These new LEDs are available in 2050 sized packages. They can be daisy-chained together, just like the older NeoPixel LEDs, to create long lengths of LED strips. They come in various lengths and have different brightness levels. You can even get them in a matrix or ring shape.
Like the WS2812B, they have a high refresh rate that keeps animations looking smooth and natural. This is important if you are using them for any kind of display where you want the LEDs to look'sharp' and 'clean'.
Another advantage is they are less timing-sensitive than the WS2812B, so you can change the timing of the clock and data signals without worrying about the effect it will have on the rest of the LEDs. It also has a better PWM frequency, so the LEDs are less likely to flicker.
I've tested a couple of these strips, and they do seem to have a bit less flicker than the ws2812b LEDs. They do still flicker a little, though, especially if you're using the strip as a marquee or some other sort of display where the LEDs will be moving a lot. I believe this is because the LEDs are retransmitting the data to the next LED in the strip and that's creating some noise on the clock and data signals.
If you look closely at these LEDs, you can see a tiny black chip and minuscule gold wires connecting it to the LED. This integrated circuit is what makes them so powerful and so small. They're a perfect example of how size doesn't have to compromise quality and performance. Depending on the project, these could be a great alternative to more expensive and bulky addressable LEDs. They're also a good choice if you need to fit a lot of pixels in a tight space.
